Top US Golf Course Oakmont Country Club

Golf is a hugely popular sport in the US which is probably the reason that most of the top ranked golf courses are located in North America.  Most golfers have a list of top courses that they would like to play and many of those courses include places where championships have taken place such as Oakmont Country Club.  The golf course at Oakmont has hosted the most golfing events of all the golf courses in the US and many who have played here considered this course to be one of the toughest in any weather conditions.

Oakmont Country Club is located in the Pennsylvanian hills near Pittsburgh and has been in existence since the early 1900s.  The course was originally designed by Henry Fownes and from its opening in 1903 has been regarded by many within the sport of golf as the most difficult golf course located in the US.  The course has changed little since it was originally opened apart from the removal of a large amount of trees during the 1960s as well as the changes to the 8th hole when the green was moved a few meters to make way for a turnpike to be constructed during the 1940s.

The Oakmont course has a high rating of 77.5 which makes it one of the highest ranked and hardest courses to play.  Many amateur golfers list this course on their must play list for the challenge the course offers as well as the atmosphere and the beautiful views of the course and surrounds.

This golf course is well known for its very fast greens and the many bunkers, with one such bunker having its own name – the church pews.  This bunker is located around the 3rd tee and measures an impressive 90 meters long and 35 meters wide with grass covered ridges running across it at various intervals.  These bunkers are so well known that many of the photos and pictures that you see of Oakmont golf course feature these bunkers.

For those people who have listed this golf course as a must play, you won’t be disappointed even you don’t bring your a game.  It is difficult to get a tee time at Oakmont as you need to join as a member or be a guest of a member.  This may be one of the more difficult courses to get on but for those who persevere you will be rewarded.
