A Monday Worth Watching

Beautiful Labor Day weekend. Tough not to stake out the television, however, when Sergio, Vijay, Ernie and Furyk are all in the top five. And all those guys have been through the kind of pressure they’re going to face in the final round of today’s Deutsche Bank Championship.

With the exception of Vijay, who won last week, it would certainly seem Sergio, Ernie and Furyk would be especially eager for a return to the winner’s circle. It may be just as intriguing, however, to see how another golfer — Camilo Villegas, who is second alone, one stroke behind Mike Weir — handles the final-round pressure.

For those who have followed Villegas, and it’s a sizable contingent, this may be the day they (and he) have long anticipated. Villegas, of course, is tough to miss. He’s a party of one out there, a Colombian by way of the University of Florida who plumb-bobs putts in spider-style, wears a house-painter’s hat, and is dressed, notably, by Swedish designer Johan Lindeberg. Oh, yeah, he’s also ripped, with a 27-inch waist, or so it looks on TV, which adds 10 pounds!

This year, Villegas has finished tied for fourth at the PGA, tied for ninth at the U.S. Open and tied for 39th at the British Open. Though he’s without an official PGA Tour victory in his three-plus years on Tour, he has won twice this year, in the Telus Skins Game and at the CVS Caremark Charity Classic with Bubba Watson.

He was a multi-time winner as a collegian and his college coach, Buddy Alexander, says he’s got true killer instinct. (In the same golf.com story, his brother reveals that his meticulousness extends to numbering socks, so as to better match the pairs.)

Lindeberg’s association with Villegas goes back to 2004, so it’s no May-September romance. (On the subject of J.Lindeberg, this is quite a week. Not only is Villegas in superb position to win, but two Swedes who wear J.Lindeberg, Richard S. Johnson and Jesper Parnevik, are tied for 11th and 21st, respectively. Of course, Parnevik is Lindeberg’s original muse.) Though it’s been several years since we’ve chatted personally with Johan, the designer and his lovely wife, Marcella, are living in New York, so we hope it won’t take a victory by Villegas to hasten a reacquaintance.

If we haven’t given you a sufficient dose of Lindeberg lore, there’s alwaysthis. The writer professes no special authority on golf style; we suspect we know better when we read the unmistakable words of a fashion insider.

With Mike Weir leading Villegas by a stroke and Ben Crane also tied for fifth four strokes back, it’s tough to look beyond the top seven golfers. Whether he wins or not, expect Villegas to stand out in the crowd.  — Robert Lohrer
