With rain-softened conditions and benign winds at Sunningdale Golf Club, Thursday's first round of the Ricoh's Women's British Open was a birdie fest. Not only did the women play well, they dressed for the occasion.
Leader Juli Inkster wore a red V-neck sweater from adidas with three diagonal stripes that actually wrapped under her side, shades of an iconic Diane Von Furstenberg wrap dress. (C'mon, tell me where you're going to get analysis like this? The crew at TNT? I think not.) Stacy Prammanasudh, who was tied for second at six-under 66, sported black-and-white patterned long shorts and black shirt with white piping on the sleeves, placket and collar. Natalie Gulbis bounded to a three-under score in her trademark adidas performance fabric shirt and beige mini skort.
Sophie Gustafson, who also shot 69, gets an honorable mention, not so much for her colors or patterns, but for the unique sponsorship she has with Major League Baseball. Thursday Gustafson donned a Cleveland Indians logoed cap and shirt -- a connection at first lost on us at styledtoatee. Sophie's husband and PGA Tour executive, Ty Votaw, confirmed that she made the choice as a concession to him.
"The Indians are one-part regional in nature (Toledo, where she last played before heading to Europe) and one part a nod to her husband who considers the Indians his favorite team," Votaw wrote via e-mail. We extend sympathies to Ty and the long-suffering Cleveland faithful, whose team is, oh, about 13 games out this season. Votaw expects Sophie to wear big-market team emblems -- the Yankees, the Red Sox -- the next couple of days, as she did at last week's Evian Masters. -- Rico Williams
